What to Pack When Visiting Yellowstone

A trip to Yellowstone National Park is the adventure of a lifetime—and packing the right gear can make all the difference. Yellowstone National Park is at high elevation, and can see snow anytime of the year, which can make packing for Yellowstone a bit tricky. As we’re writing this, on June 24th, 2025, Yellowstone just saw snow yesterday!

You’ll also need a few key items that you probably wouldn’t need on a typical road trip, such as bear spray. Yellowstone is grizzly country after all!

Whether you're exploring on a Yellowstone Tour with Grubsteak Expeditions or heading out on your own, here’s a packing list to help you stay comfortable, safe, and ready for anything.

🧥 Layered Clothing is Key

Yellowstone’s weather is unpredictable. The same day can bring cold snow and warm sun. Packing layers are key! Bring:

  • A moisture-wicking base layer

  • Insulating fleece or down jacket

  • Waterproof outer shell or rain jacket

  • Comfortable hiking pants

👟 Footwear Built for Trails

You’ll be doing a lot of walking. Pack:

  • Broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes

  • Wool socks to prevent blisters

  • Lightweight sandals or camp shoes for relaxing

🎒 Daypack Essentials

Whether you're joining a guided tour or doing a self-drive loop, bring:

  • Reusable water bottle or hydration pack

  • Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF

  • Hat & sunglasses

  • Trail snacks

  • Binoculars for spotting wildlife

  • Bear Spray

🧳 Extras You’ll Be Glad You Packed

  • Park map or downloaded offline GPS

  • Camera or phone with extra battery

  • Bug spray (especially near lakes and forests)

  • Headlamp or flashlight

  • First aid kit

🏕️ If You’re Camping or Overnighting

  • Sleeping bag rated for cooler temps

  • Sleeping pad

  • Emergency GPS Beacon

  • Food storage container (bear-proof, if camping outside designated sites)

A good rule of thumb? Pack for all four seasons, even in July—and don't forget to check weather updates before heading into the park!
